The “ValEUs” network aims to provide a realistic account of EU foreign policy, develop alternative policy agendas, and identify counterstrategies to future contestations. Moreover, it seeks to redefine the role of universities as globally responsible, socially invested, and democratic actors.
This first academic workshop of ValEUs, co-organised by Kolja Lindner at University Paris 8 and Amelie Kuter at European University Viadrina, aims to clarify the foundations of a constructive critical perspective on European values, engaging with their immanent critique, performativity and historical contextualisation.

The contributions in this special issue explore the intersection of discourse, crises and the political during the Covid-19 pandemic. By focusing on ‘the political’, the contributors go beyond understandings of ‘politics’ as procedures and processes of decision-making. Instead, they explore the nuanced ways in which pandemic discourses shape struggles over the normalised socio-political order and its legitimate subjects.
